DigiPal at Dagstuhl

The DigiPal project will be represented internationally again, this time at a Dagstuhl Perspectives Workshop from 18–21 September 2012 at the Leibniz-Zentrum für Informatik, Schloss Dagstuhl. 'Computation and Palaeography: Potentials and Limits' is a three-day workshop organised by Tal Hassner (Open University, Israel), Malte Rehbein (University of Nebraska, USA), Lior Wolf (Tel Aviv University, Israel) and Peter Stokes (of the DigiPal project).

Quoting from the Dagstuhl Perspectives web page, these Workshops

... look beyond recent research far into the future, trying to identify new goals, fields and applications of computer science. The scope of Dagstuhl Perspectives Workshops includes reflection about the state of individual or overlapping fields. ...

Dagstuhl Perspectives Workshops are more oriented towards a small group of internationally renowned senior researchers for an intensive discussion with a focus on strategy. In contrast to Dagstuhl Seminars they do not refer to their actual research results but reflect the state of a field, identify strengths and weaknesses, determine promising new developments and relevant new problems, and seek synergies between different fields.

Dagstuhl Perspective Workshops are lead by a small group of established leaders in their field. They invite 15 to 30 participants of international standing to discuss thoroughly for 3 to 5 days the status quo and the future direction of a field in computer science. Compared with Dagstuhl Seminars, a Dagstuhl Perspectives Workshop is more oriented towards senior researchers with a focus on strategy.

The workshop is strictly invitation-only, unfortunately, but it is bringing together a group of experts in various branches of informatics and palaeography from around the world. The results will be published, and further details of the event are available from the workshop website, including the project motivation, a full list of participants and a set of shared documents. It should be a fascinating few days, and I look forward to sharing the results with you all.
