Stokes, English Vernacular Script, ca 990–ca 1035, Vol. 2 (PhD Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2006)

Although the passage is heavily worn, almost all of the text is still legible. The scribe wrote a somewhat rounded hand and used a thin pen with little shading. Ascenders are long, straight, and wedged, although the wedges were not always filled in. Descenders are also long and are straight. Minims have rising feet and either barbs or approach-strokes. Teardrop-shaped a was used throughout. A more rounded form was used for æ, the top and back of the a-component were formed with a single stroke, the hook of e is always low, and the tongue is straight and rising. The back of d is relatively short and can be concave down or straight and angled at about 45°. Round and horned e are both found, the hook shorter than the lower curve and turned in a little to the left, and the tongue long and sometimes rising and sometimes horizontal. The tongue of f is long and angled up slightly, and the hook is fairly flat and fairly angular. The top of g is flat and fairly wide. The mid-section hangs from close to the centre and usually descends fairly vertically before turning sharply right, and the tail curves in a round, nearly-closed loop which is narrower than the top. In some cases the mid-section of g hangs more from the right and bulges out more to the left, and the tail is then wider. The shoulders of h, m, and n are all quite rounded. That of r is a little more angular, and the down-stroke here can turn slightly in to the left. Only tall s was used; it stands on the base-line and has a fairly long, forward-reaching hook. The scribe used ð exclusively in preference to þ except in the usual abbreviation for þæt. The back of ð is long, angled at about 60°, and turns right at the tip, and the through-stroke is long, thin, and hooked down on the right. Straight-limbed, dotted y was used, the tail curved slightly left, and the right branch hooked left. The top of 7 is sometimes short and concave up, and sometimes wider and flatter.
