Stokes, English Vernacular Script, ca 990–ca 1035, Vol. 2 (PhD Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2006)
This hand is squarer and more conservative than G.338-1, and bodies are relatively short but are rather wide. A flat-topped a was used, formed like u with a top-stroke, and a similar form appears in the a-component of æ. Round c appears throughout, and d has a short, approximately horizontal back. Both round and horned e appear, but no tall forms or ligatures were used. The tail of g is closed and quite circular, and the mid-section hangs from the centre of the top-stroke. The down-stroke of k descends well below the base-line, and the two branches are c-shaped and remain between base-line and cue-height. The shoulders of h, m, n, and r are angular, and the letters often lack feet. Round and tall s were used, the latter appearing most frequently before t but also at the ends of words and before a second, round s. The back of ð has a tapering, vertical tip, and the cross-stroke is roughly horizontal. The body of þ is quite angular. Undotted round and straight-limbed y appear, but the most common is the dotted, round form.
