Stokes, English Vernacular Script, ca 990–ca 1035, Vol. 2 (PhD Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2006)
This gloss was written in comparatively large letters and is almost the same size as the main text. The pen was held quite flat and the script has a good deal of shading. The letters are somewhat crudely formed as strokes do not always join neatly, and letters have a somewhat rectangular shape The ascender of l is fairly long and has a hook.. The descenders of f, wynn, r and s are all straight. A wide, somewhat rounded somewhat flat-topped a was used. The back of d is fairly long, more or less straight, and angled at about 15–20°. Horned e is found, the tongue long and the hook rounded. The tongue of f is long and straight, and the hook somewhat angular. The top of g is flat, and the mid-stroke begins approximately in the centre, is quite straight and angled out to the left, then hooks sharply right, extends horizontally, and curves around in a fairly broad, open, horizontally-tipped tail. The shoulders of n and r are fairly broad and fairly angular, the stroke close to horizontal and then turning fairly quickly to the vertical; the foot of r is relatively long and approximately horizontal. Long s was used with a prominent approach-stroke at cue-height and a fairly short hook. Both minim-strokes of u have approach-strokes, and the letter is fairly wide and rectangular. Straight-limbed dotted y was used.
